~ The Obituary ~
Surrounded by love and cherished memories, Percy Thornton, Jr. entered eternal rest on January 31, 2026.
Born in Whitehall, Maryland, he was the son of the late Percy and Clara (Jackson) Thornton.
He was educated at Carver Colored High School n Towson, Maryland. He later relocated to Westbury, New York, where he was employed as a fender and later served at Nassau University Medical Center as a surgical technician and in-patient transport.
He met and married Clara B. Thornton and they shared 51 years of marriage until her passing in 2013.
Shortly after Percy retired, he moved from Westbury to Mullins, South Carolina, where he made his home. He took great pride in his yard and found joy in tending to his lawn. He also enjoyed attending yard sales, shooting his guns, playing dominos and spending time with family and friends.
Percy was a faithful servant of God throughout his life. While living in Westbury, New York, he was a faithful member of Westbury Divine Congregational Church of God in New York, where he served as a Deacon. After relocating to South Carolina, he became a faithful member of First Friendship Baptist Church of Nichols, South Carolina, where he served as a member of the male choir, Member of the Sunday School Class No. 1, member of the trustee board and finance committee.
He was preceded in death by his beloved in-law sister, Beatrice Roberts “Pee Wee”, and his favorite nephew, Andre, both of whom held a special place in his heart.
He leaves to cherish his memory his wife, Rebecca Thornton, his goddaughter, Janet, his sister-in-law Yvonne; and a host of nieces and nephews, including Tanya Guthrie Carroll, Lasanya Spence, Robert Jackson (uncle) and Lynn.
He is also remembered by his in-laws through his marriage to Rebecca; Anna Smith, Mabel Benymoon, William Smith, Joseph Smith and Leon Smith.
In addition, he cherished the memory of his late first wife through his in-laws, Ruby Alston, Coleen Samuels, Donald Riggins, and Sammy McDaniel as well as her nieces and nephews, including Hanley, Chris, Patrick, Poochie, Mary Riggins, Neka, Shay and many more.
