Martha M Alford

    On Thursday, July 23, 2015, life’s voyage ended for Martha M. Alford, at McLeod Regional Medical Center, Florence, South Carolina and she found peace in the hands of God Almighty.

     Martha M. Alford, was born in Elliott, South Carolina on September 8, 1934 to the late Dargan McDonald, Sr., and Emma McDonald. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, Dargan McDonald, Jr. and Jesse McDonald.

     She was educated in the public schools of Bishopville, South Carolina and graduated from Dennis High School. She received the Bachelor of Science degree from Morris College, Sumter, South Carolina. She completed further graduate studies at Francis Marion University, Florence, South Carolina. She taught in the Lee and Marion County School District, retiring after 30 years of devoted service.

     Martha married Ellison Alford, Sr., and together they raised three sons, Ellison, Jr., Harold and Terry and one daughter, LaTasha. She enjoyed life to the fullest and her family was very central to her life.

     Martha, a devoted Christian, gave her life to Christ at an early age, while attending St. Paul United Methodist Church, Elliott, South Carolina. She continued her spiritual growth at New Bethel AME Church, Bishopville, South Carolina. She later joined Ebenezer AME Church, Mullins, South Carolina where she worked tirelessly for the Lord in the capacities of the Women’s Missionary Society, Board of Trustees and Stewardess Board Number 4.

     Also committed to her civic and philanthropic organizations, Martha was a devoted member of the Omicron Omicron Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Inc. and the Starlight Chapter No. 169 Order of the Eastern Star.

     Left to cherish her precious memories of Martha and her husband of fifty-nine years, Ellison Alford, Sr., of the home; three sons: Ellison Alford, Jr. and Harold Dewayne Alford of Long Island, New York and Terry (Faith) Alford of Matthews, North Carolina; one daughter, LaTasha Alford of the home; three grandchildren: Kimberly Faith Alford, Hampton Emanual Alford and Courtney Ellison Alford; two great grandchildren: Morgan Drake and Tyra Alford; five sisters: Hattie M. Gathers of Elliott, South Carolina, Willie Mae McDonald, Annie M. Tucker, Georgianna M. Durant and Esther McDonald all of Long Island, New York; one brother Robert Carl (Deloris) Wells of Elliott, South Carolna; two sisters-in-law: Ruth Ann McDonald of Mayesville, South Carolina and Ethel McDonald of Baltimore, Maryland; father-in-law: Hampton Alford; three brothers-in-law, Robert Perkins, Harry Young, George (Laurita) Alford, Garnell (Gayle) Alford, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, friends and neighbors.
