Welcome to the memorial page for

Katherine Owens

February 16, 2015

“The Lord is my light and my salvation whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life: of whom shall I be afraid.”  Psalm 27:1

Deaconess Katherine “Koot” Washington Owens was borne December 13, 1921 in Rowland, North Carolina to the late George and Nora Campbell Washington. She was one of nine children of which seven preceded her in death.

On Monday night, February 16, 2015, Deaconess Owens entered into eternal rest to receive her Heavenly reward. She was married to the late Deacon Matthew Owens for seventy-two loving years. To this union three loving children were borne: Joan Johnson, and Alphonzo Owens preceded her in death.

Deaconess Owens was educated in the Marion County Public Schools. She had various occupations especially in factory work.

At an early age, Deaconess Owens joined Mt. Olive Baptist Church. She participated in many ministries of the church: which included the Deaconess Board, Senior Missionary Society, Teacher of the Ladies of Faith Sunday School Class. She was also a faithful member of the Mt. Olive Prayer Meeting Ministry for over fifty years and member of the Bible Study Class. She was a dedicated member of Starlight Chapter #169 Order of Eastern Stars.

Deaconess Owens was a community missionary. Whenever someone was sick or had death in their family, she would have Deacon Owens to go to the home with fried chicken, cakes, pies, or whatever it took to make the person or the family comfortable. She loved to beautify the world by keeping her yard filled with colorful flowers and shrubbery. Even as we speak today, her yard is beautified with her yellow shrubbery. Church Street is more beautiful because of Mrs. Katherine’s flowers and shrubbery in her yard.

Deaconess Katherine Owens leaves to reminisce her fond loving memories: one son, James (Diana) Owens, Swansea, South Carolina; eight grandchildren, eleven great grandchildren, thirteen great great grandchildren; one brother, Rev. James Washington, New York, New York; three sisters-in-law: Mrs. Corrine Crawford, Chester, Pennsylvania, Mrs. Dorothy Harrington and Bobbie Owens, Pataskala, Ohio; one brother-in-law: Mr. Joseph Owens, Rome, New York; two special ladies who were in her life: Mrs. Ruby Vance and Mrs. Harriet L. Williams, a wonderful caregiver, Ms. Cheryl Duncan and a host of nieces, nephews and friends
