First Sergeant (Ret.) Irish Stackhouse
First Sergeant (Ret.) Irish Stackhouse, affectionately known as “Frank,” was born on February 2, 1949, in Horry County, South Carolina, to the late Eva Mae and John Lacy Stackhouse.
He received his early education in Horry County Schools and graduated from Finklea High School. At a young age, Frank was baptized and joined Hills Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where he nurtured a strong faith and a commitment to serving others.
Shortly after high school, Frank was drafted into the United States Army, where he served honorably for 26 years, including active duty during the Vietnam War. He rose to the rank of First Sergeant and was fondly known by the nicknames “Top” and “First” for his leadership as a drill sergeant and Army recruiter. Notably, he was among the first African American recruiters in Florence, South Carolina.
While serving in the military, Frank pursued higher education, earning an associate degree from Columbia College in Missouri and later a bachelor’s degree in Sociology from Coker College.
In 1975, Frank married the love of his life, Joyce Williamson. Together, they raised two daughters and traveled across the country before settling in Marion, South Carolina, where they shared 50 years of love and devotion.
After retiring from the Army, Frank co-founded the Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps (JROTC) program at Marion High School alongside Major William Barnhill. Under their leadership, the program thrived, with the drill team earning numerous accolades and consistently receiving the distinguished "Honor Unit with Distinction" award. In addition to his teaching role, he also drove school buses, ensuring the safety and care of his students, especially his grandson, Avery.
A pillar of the community, Frank was among the first reserve deputies in Marion County and remained actively involved in school and community events, especially football and basketball games. Whether at a school function or on his daily walks through town, he was a familiar and friendly presence always approachable and supportive.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents; four brothers: Robert Lee Stackhouse, Rudolph Stackhouse, Ronald Stackhouse, and Joe Jones; and one sister, Janice Stackhouse.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his devoted wife of 50 years, Joyce Stackhouse; two daughters, Iris (Earl) Barr of Marion, South Carolina, and Shannon Stackhouse of Columbia, South Carolina; one beloved grandson, Avery Barr of Marion; two sisters, Edna Jones of Duford, South Carolina, and Johnny Faye (Paul) Gerald of Bridgeport, Connecticut; three sisters-in-law: Marilyn (James) Blue of Mullins, South Carolina, Bernette Lee of Nichols, South Carolina, and Barbara Williamson of Columbus, Georgia; along with a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends.
