She received her education in Clarendon Public Schools. Her parents relocated to Duford, South Carolina when she was a teenager. She was converted at an early age and became a member of Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Horry County where she remained for many years before joining Mill Creek Baptist Church in Mullins South Carolina.
