Gillis Jones Obituary

~The Obituary ~

Be fruitful unto death, and I will give you the crown of life.”

~Revelations 2:10

On Friday, August 26, 2022, God was walking through the garden and looked at one of his willing workers, Gillis Lee Jones, looking weary and tired, so He put His arms around him and whispered, “Come with me and I will give you rest.”

Gillis Jones was born January 1, 1953, in Marion, South Carolina to the late Gillis “Henry” and Louise Jones. He attended Horry County Public Schools until he graduated from Floyds High School in 1971. He furthered his education at Voorhees College, Morris College and completed his education by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Psychology at NYU. He then continued to reside in New York and was employed by the IBM Corporation and worked as a counselor at a drug rehabilitation center.

He later returned to his roots, back home to Nichols, South Carolina where he was employed by J.Reuben Long Detention Center, Delta Finance, Security Finance and World Finance where he worked until retirement. He also went back to his home church, Oak Grove Missionary Baptist Church where he rededicated his life to Christ and was a dedicated member and deacon. You could find him singing in the choir or during the opening of worship service. He was most known for his renditions of Ups & Down, It’s in My Mind and Somebody Touched Me.

Best known as Willie Boy and Uncle Willie, touched the lives of many. He left an impression on everyone he met. He was a giver, and encourager, a supporter and loved his family with everything that God had placed inside of him. He will be long remembered and missed by his family.

Preceding him in death were his parents: Henry and Louise Jones; two brothers: Ernest Young and Henry Jones, Jr.; two sisters: Della Wilson and Mary “Peggy” Washington and best friend for several years: Jessie Wright.

Left to forever cherish his memories are, two sisters: Betha Oliver of the home and Adell(John) Strayhorn of Loris, SC; two brothers: Larry (Daisy) Jones of Nichols, SC and Pastor William H. (Jonnie) Jones of Loris, SC; two special nieces: Joyce Bessant of the home and Anitirice Jones of Nichols, SC; two special nephews: Jeremy and Will Jones both of Loris, SC and his friend, more like a brother: Jimmy Graham of Florida; a special friend and cousin: Mattie L.
