Emma Crosby Obituary

On December 26, 2020 our beloved mother and grandmother, Emma Jane Crosby age 74, departed this earthly life peacefully. She was born on October 29, 1946 in Marion County, Rains, South Carolina. As our mother would say, she was born by the river in a little tent, lol.

Emma left South Carolina as a teenager and moved to Boston, Massachusetts and from Boston, Emma moved to the Washington, DC area. She was a devoted member of the Florida Avenue Baptist Church for more than thirty years. Emma worked for the Social Security Office of Hearings and Appeals for twenty-six years. She later returned to South Carolina to care for her father. Upon her return, she attended the church where she was baptized, the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church, helmed by the Reverend Dr. Alvin C. Robinson. Our mother was involved in many activities at Pleasant Grove; she was a Trustee, a Missionary, Sunday School Teacher, on the Hospitality Committee, Educational Scholarship Committee, Special Services Committee, and the Little Pee Dee Women’s Auxiliary.

Emma was a renaissance woman. She was Toastmaster, who won numerous awards for public speaking. Her baking prowess was renowned. She could sew like the finest designers. She learned to code computers before most of us knew what a computer was. Additionally, she was actively involved in the Race for the Cure against breast cancer; as well as being a member of the Palmetto High School Reunion Committee.

Mom’s legacy is one of fierce devotion to God, her family, and her friends. She was brave, fearless, and true of heart. She never fought for herself; the fight was always for others. To that end, she is loved by many.

Mom was preceded in death along with her beloved parents:  Lawson and Christine Crawford; her sisters: Betty (Clarence) Jackson and Rosea Barnes, and brother-n-law: Ezekiel.

Emma leaves to cherish her love and legacy ~ her three children: Horace {Von} Crosby Jr, Christine {Daiza} Crosby, Carlotta Battle; her brother: James {Katherine} Crawford; her sister: Willimae;  her grandchildren who she loved dearly: Charlotte Watson, Lawson Diggs, and Emmanuel Diggs and a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends who she loved and who loved her.
