Duane Hemingway Obituary

                                                  ~ The Obituary ~

“For I am convinced that neither death nor life…will be able to separate us from the love of
God that is in Jesus Christ our Lord.” Romans 8:38-39

Duane Lamont Hemingway was born and raised in New Haven, CT on April
17, 1967, the son of Mr. Woodroe Hemingway and Mrs. Rose
White. He departed this life on December 31, 2025, at a rehabilitation healthcare
center in Florence, SC.

He was educated in the public schools of New Haven, Connecticut. He
departed New Haven, CT in 1988 to make a life in Suitland, MD with his mother,
stepfather, grandmother, and sister. He worked various jobs before finding an
admiration for cooking. He attended Stratford University enrolling in their culinary
program. He became a sous chef working at Tupelo Honey Southern Kitchen and
Bar.

He left Maryland and moved to the Charlotte, NC area, where he met and
married his wife, Patricia. They enjoyed taking yearly cruises together. While
living in North Carolina, he was employed by Great Wolf Lodge Resorts, where he
had the responsibility of cooking delicious meals for employees and patrons. He and
his wife later divorced and he moved to Darlington, SC in 2018.  He held many
jobs in the cooking field while migrating to South Carolina. He went back to school
and received his food handling license. His final place of employment in South
Carolina was McLeod Regional Medical Center, where he was a head cook for the
doctors and nurses on staff.

On Sundays, he would call his mother and tell her what delicious meals he was
preparing for dinner. On his last visit to Maryland in 2023, he cooked a big dinner
for his family. His mother enjoyed bragging about her son’s cooking skills.
He loved cheering for the Dallas Cowboys. Win or lose, he was devoted to his
football team. He was an avid movie buff. He would sit home and stream movies in
his spare time. He enjoyed listening to old school hip hop and R&B music. He
loved playing video games on his PlayStation. He also loved spending time with
his beloved cat, Suga. He once brought Suga on a road trip to Maryland. Duane
could put anything together without using instructions. He was super smart when it
came to electronics. He was a modern day, “Mr. Fix It.” Duane will truly
be missed.

He leaves to cherish his loving memories, his mother: Rose White of Suitland,
MD; father: Woodroe Hemingway of New Haven, CT; one sister: Danielle Davis
(Frank) of Upper Marlboro, MD: two daughters: Shallice Battle of Springfield, MA
and Marche Day of Atlanta, GA; two sons: Duane Hemingway, Jr. of Washington,
DC and Demauri Powell of Washington, DC; three aunts: Edna Graves of New
Haven, CT, Pamela Smith of Marion, SC, and Nadine Dozier of Marion, SC; one
uncle: Anthony Williams (Tiffany) of Florence, SC; three grandchildren: Joseph
Vann of Springfield, MA, Amari Vann of Springfield, MA, and Marcella Manson
of Atlanta, GA, one niece: Autum Davis of Upper Marlboro, MD and a host
of relatives and friends.
