Life’s Reflections
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.”Matthew 11:28-30
On Saturday, January 4, 2020, Mrs. Ella Louise Alston answered the Master’s call at the Bethea Retirement Home, Darlington, SC, and a beautiful life here on earth took flight to gain her heavenly rest.
In Bennettsville, (Marlboro Co.) SC on March 19, 1945, the late Frank and Arline Prince Curry welcomed into this world a baby girl, whom they named Ella Louise.
Ella grew up in Marlboro and Horry Counties and received her formal education there.
She met and married James Summerson, and this union was blessed with five (5) children. Later in life, she met and married Paul Alston and together they nurtured her children to adulthood.
She came to know the Lord early in life and joined the Sawmill Baptist Church, Bennettsville, SC. After moving to Mullins, SC, she united with the Saint Paul Baptist Church. She was devoted to her church and her pastor, attending church regularly, and singing on the Senior Choir until her health failed. If you did not know her pastor, you knew him after you met her. She would often say, “Please let my pastor no where I am, if not, he will find me.”
Ella Louise enjoyed socializing with her family, friends and neighbors. She was a people person; never met a stranger, and always had an encouraging word. Her memory will live on forever and she will be missed by many.
Her legacy of love and kindness will be forever cherished by her 3 sons: James Summerson of Columbia SC, Greg Summerson of the home, Kenneth Smith (Tasha) of Florence SC. Two daughters: Pat T. Washington (Ernest) of Philadelphia, Pa, Annette Frazier (Willie) of Mullins, SC. One God daughter: Susan Gillespie of Florence SC. One sister: Lucille Davis of Conway, SC. Two brothers: Benjamin Curry (Edna) of Tabor City, NC, Frank Curry (Ethel- deceased) of Conway, SC. Three sisters and two brothers proceeded her in death. One uncle: John Curry (Sara) of Brooklyn NY. 34 grandchildren, 49 great grandchildren. Four special nephews: Kelvin Alston of Detroit Michigan, Marvin Alston of Mullins, Ricky Curry of Nichols, Donnie Summerson of Bayboro SC. Special friends: Arberline Roberts-Guy, Joyce Smith, Betty Beck, Lorraine Crosland, Cynthia Reaves, the many caring residents of Proctor Street, her church family, and a host of nieces, nephews, and cousins.
