Welcome to the memorial page for

Lila B Legette

September 3, 2016

Mrs. Lila Bell Legette was born on October 12, 1935, in Mullins, South Carolina, to the late George and Delilah (Worley) Himphill. She departed this life on September 3, 2016. She joined Nazarene Missionary Baptist Church at the age of 12 and over her lifetime, she served as a Sunday School worker, missionary and member of the senior choir. Lila attended Palmetto High School and was employed by AVM for 26 years.

She was joined in holy matrimony to the late Mr. Major Legette, Jr. on October 14, 1950.

Lila was a dynamic woman. A mother, grandmother, sister, friend, advisor, listener, encourager – words cannot express the quality of woman she represented. She embraced life and was full of unconditional love. Never judgmental, always kind – a gift to all who knew her.

Lila enjoyed cooking for her boys, spending time with her family and friends, baking cakes and pies, fishing, eating Spots and Croakers, and working out at the gym. Her favorite hymn was “Nothing but the Blood of Jesus.”

She was preceded in death by her parents: George and Delilah Himphill; husband: Major Legette, Jr.; son: Stanley Legette; son-in-law: Michael Berkley; and four siblings: Hattie Himphill, Oliver Himphill, Sr., Ida Robinson, and Johnny Himphill, Sr.

She leaves to cherish her precious memories her children: Leroy (Hestina) Legette, Sr. of Syracuse, NY; Lewis Legette of Tampa, FL; Randy (Annie) Legette of Lexington Park, MD; Vanessa Edwards of Mullins, SC; Tereasa Berkley of Camden-Wyoming, DE; Annette (Kenneth) Gilchrist of Sumter, SC; and daughters-in-law: Connie Legette of Springfield, TN and Linda Legette of Syracuse, NY; two sisters: Georgia McDuffie of Marion, SC and Emma Kate (Gilbert) Grainger of Syracuse, NY; one brother: LeeVander (Ora Lee) Himphill of Atlanta, GA; two sisters-in-law: Ester Mae Burroughs of Florence, SC and Odessa Polk of Buffalo, NY; two life-long friends: Madge Bristow and Mary Linda Foxworth of Mullins, SC; special neighbor and friend: John McFarland; special daughter: Leafie Lee; special son: Jerry Fields; thirty-six grandchildren; thirty-six great grandchildren; two great-great grandchildren, eight adopted grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.
