Ulysee Genwright

~ Obituary ~

     Ulysee, also affectionately known as Ulyee, Pop-Pop and Mr. Lee departed this life on Thursday morning, June 29, 2017 at the McLeod Hospice House in Florence, SC.

     Ulysee was born in Centenary, SC on January 16, 1934  to the late Wade Genwright and Hattie Legette Genwright.  He was preceded in death by his brothers Sylvester, Ranie, Jonathan and Willie Genwright and a sister; Alice Genwright Beathea.

     The story of Ulysee & Lillie Bell began somewhere in the mid 1940’s when Ulysee started visiting the Brigman Plantation.  He would go to the plantation to ride bikes and play with Lillie Bell’s brothers.  While there he began making eyes at his future wife. In 1946 Ulysee gave Lillie Bell her first Valentine card which he hand delivered because he didn’t have a penny for a stamp.  He addressed the envelope to his wife.  A couple of years later when Lillie Bell turned sixteen, Ulysee drove to her home in his first car to court her officially, a 1941 black Master Deluxe Chevrolet.  After Lillie Bell graduated from high school Ulysee asked her to marry him and on September 22, 1953.  Jerry Brigman, Lillie Bell’s dad told Ulysee “ if you can’t get along with her bring her back home”.  They got along for sixty-three years after they were married and to this union seven children were born; Jennifer, Patricia & Patrick, Anthony, Jacquelyn, Ulysee, Jr. and Angela. 

     Ulysee was a quiet and humble man.  He was an avid car collecter, clean smelling and sophisticated dresser.  He wasn’t a highly educated man since his education was interrupted to work and help support his family but he was truly a man of perfection. He believed in doing things right and proper and that the quality of work he performed be as good or proper as it could possibly be.  He was a member of the Refuge Apostolic Church in Chester, PA where he resided for more than forty years making a living and raising his family.   He was a hardworking husband and father diligently providing for his family while performing various jobs throughout his life including farming, meat plant worker and construction worker.  After nearly seventy years together he and Lillie Bell returned to the Marion  completing what they started.

     After losing his sight Ulysee told his daughter Angela “if he could get his eyes back he would just drive until he couldn’t drive no more”.

     Ulysee is survived by and leaves to cherish fond memories his loving wife; Lillie Bell and his children; Jennifer Logan, Patricia Nanamani (James), Patrick (Darlene), Anthony (Georgia), Jacquelyn Genwright Witherspoon, Ulysee Jr, and Angela (Marlo) Freeman; twenty-one grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren and four great great grandchildren; two brothers Henry (Janie Ruth) Genwright and Malcon Roy (Hattie) Genwright; two sisters Verdell Genwright Davis (Rufus) and Vondell Genwright Davis (Reverend Willie); two sisters-in-law Hallie Platt and Jeanette Hollis; one brother-in-law Deleon (Margie) Brigman; and a host of neices, nephews, cousins and extended family.
